Back at Gabrielaâs house Sally set out breakfast on the kitchen table: Egg McMuffins, hashbrowns, pancakes with maple syrup, a deep-fried apple pie, and one large chocolate milkshake. Sally had an Egg McMuffin and left the rest for Gabriela to gobble up. After she finished eating, she went to the front door to watch for Amanda, who had agreed to come by at eight oâclock. The reporter appeared right on time. However, instead of approaching Gabrielaâs house, she went to the one directly across the road.
She was halfway up the walk before Sally opened the door and called to her.
âOh, hey!â Amanda waved, crossed the street, and came up the porch steps. âDidnât you say it was the house with the blue truck out frontâ¦?â
âA slight misdirection,â Sally admitted. âI wanted to make sure you were by yourself.â
Amanda looked hurt. âYou thought I would double-cross you?â
âNo, of course not. I wanted to be sure nobody was following you. I couldnât be sure those thugs werenât watching the motel.â She opened the door. âCome inside.â
Gabriela had finished eating at the kitchen table and was now sucking on her milkshake, her cheeks dimpled with the effort.
âHello,â Amanda said. âYou must be Sallyâs new friend? Whatâs your name?â
âGabriela,â the girl said in a shy voice.
âItâs nice to meet you, Gabriela. Iâm Amanda.â
âGabby,â Sally said, âI have to go somewhere this morning. Iâve asked Amanda to stay here with you until I return. Is that okay with you?â
âYouâre coming back?â
âOf course I am. Hopefully I wonât be very long either.â
âOkay.â
âGood. Now why donât you go watch TV? I need to talk to Amanda for a little.â
After Gabriela went to the den, Sally said, âGot any cigarettes on you?â
âI didnât think you smoked?â
âSeems like I started again last night.â
Outside on the porch Amanda produced a folded map from her handbag. âHereâs what you asked me to bring. It looks like one of those Disneyland maps, but it was the only one in the motelâs reception.â
Sally unfolded and flattened the map on a wobbly metal table. It was a cartoony 3-D rendering of Camp Verde. âOkay, weâre right about here.â She placed a finger over their location.
âIf youâre asking me,â Amanda said, âI would want to meet this woman in the most populated spot possible. Soâ¦what about there?â She tapped a spot marked with drawings of a giraffe, tiger, and rhinoceros. Ash from her cigarette fell onto the map. She brushed it aside.
âOut of Africa Wildlife Park,â Sally said, reading the small text.
âIf they havenât temporarily closed, Iâm sure there will still be some people there today. Or how about the visitor center? It looks like itâs just down the street from here.â
âIâd rather meet her somewhere not populated so I know sheâs alone. What about that?â She pointed to a place on the outskirts of town called Montezuma Castle National Monument. âIs it an actual castle?â
âNot really. You know the ancient ruins in Jordan that are carved into a cliff face? Montezuma is kind of like that, only on a smaller scale.
