Back at Gabriela’s house Sally set out breakfast on the kitchen table: Egg McMuffins, hashbrowns, pancakes with maple syrup, a deep-fried apple pie, and one large chocolate milkshake. Sally had an Egg McMuffin and left the rest for Gabriela to gobble up. After she finished eating, she went to the front door to watch for Amanda, who had agreed to come by at eight o’clock. The reporter appeared right on time. However, instead of approaching Gabriela’s house, she went to the one directly across the road.

She was halfway up the walk before Sally opened the door and called to her.

“Oh, hey!” Amanda waved, crossed the street, and came up the porch steps. “Didn’t you say it was the house with the blue truck out front…?”

“A slight misdirection,” Sally admitted. “I wanted to make sure you were by yourself.”

Amanda looked hurt. “You thought I would double-cross you?”

“No, of course not. I wanted to be sure nobody was following you. I couldn’t be sure those thugs weren’t watching the motel.” She opened the door. “Come inside.”

Gabriela had finished eating at the kitchen table and was now sucking on her milkshake, her cheeks dimpled with the effort.

“Hello,” Amanda said. “You must be Sally’s new friend? What’s your name?”

“Gabriela,” the girl said in a shy voice.

“It’s nice to meet you, Gabriela. I’m Amanda.”

“Gabby,” Sally said, “I have to go somewhere this morning. I’ve asked Amanda to stay here with you until I return. Is that okay with you?”

“You’re coming back?”

“Of course I am. Hopefully I won’t be very long either.”

“Okay.”

“Good. Now why don’t you go watch TV? I need to talk to Amanda for a little.”

After Gabriela went to the den, Sally said, “Got any cigarettes on you?”

“I didn’t think you smoked?”

“Seems like I started again last night.”

Outside on the porch Amanda produced a folded map from her handbag. “Here’s what you asked me to bring. It looks like one of those Disneyland maps, but it was the only one in the motel’s reception.”

Sally unfolded and flattened the map on a wobbly metal table. It was a cartoony 3-D rendering of Camp Verde. “Okay, we’re right about here.” She placed a finger over their location.

“If you’re asking me,” Amanda said, “I would want to meet this woman in the most populated spot possible. So…what about there?” She tapped a spot marked with drawings of a giraffe, tiger, and rhinoceros. Ash from her cigarette fell onto the map. She brushed it aside.

“Out of Africa Wildlife Park,” Sally said, reading the small text.

“If they haven’t temporarily closed, I’m sure there will still be some people there today. Or how about the visitor center? It looks like it’s just down the street from here.”

“I’d rather meet her somewhere not populated so I know she’s alone. What about that?” She pointed to a place on the outskirts of town called Montezuma Castle National Monument. “Is it an actual castle?”

“Not really. You know the ancient ruins in Jordan that are carved into a cliff face? Montezuma is kind of like that, only on a smaller scale.
